BBC has an intresting article on the slowing of deforestation.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4436116.stm

Quotes from the article:

"The speed of global deforestation is showing signs of slowing down because of new planting and natural forest extension, according to new figures."

"The deforestation continues at an alarming rate, but thanks to efforts in planting new trees and restoring degraded lands as well as natural [forest] expansion in some regions, the net loss is a little lower"

It seems that there are disagreements on this.

The manner that the measurements are taken are in doubt. However, I tend to think that if you continue to use the same stick, it doesn't really matter if the stick is 11.5 inches or 12 - improvement is being made.

In the north, there are a lot of plantations which are the man replacement of forest. There are issues with this - but I am not competent to address them.

However, in the tropics, it ain't looking good. I guess it goes with what I have always thought - without an economic model, all the good will in the world won't stop it.

I'd have to agree with Fred. Seems it depends on what sources you are looking at.

MSNBC recently ran a three part series on the rapid growth of deforestation.

Part 1 - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22970058

Part 2 - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22993043/wid=18298287

And I can tell you first hand that deforestation in Brasil is occuring at alarming rates as well. Despite recent efforts to get a handle on it.

We are currently working on a reforestation project of 6 endangered species in Brasil. We're still in the infancy stages but, our site is being developed if you're interested in learning more about what we're doing.
