I am in the early stages of research into the economic viability of a project.  Any information you can share (all three if possible) would be very helpful.

Im trying to startup a 40-ac plantation in southern california. I also am looking in Mexico just south of the US border near Nogales and another site near Yuma arizona.

I have a few plants grown in 2007 to learn from, but im in need of seed in the US. Im not willing to go through the hastle of import at this time, unless I have no other options available.

Dearest Scott, Ron and JM,

Thanks for your attentions.  Please try to contacts with our office in USA with Ms. Wendy Nob (wendynob@yahoo.com).

Surely we will do our best to fulfill your requirements.  We had 2 Generic Jatropha Seeds for Germaplasm called Improved Products IP-1 and IP-2, IP-2 are the upgrade from IP-1.

Thanks,

Khrisna

I volunteer some of my time with US charities working in West Africa.  Although jatropha is not indigenous to West Africa, it has become quite common and is considered practically a weed in some areas.  It would be great if I could figure out a way of having the local communities earn money through harvesting the seeds or pressing the seeds for oil.  Is there an international market for either the seeds or the pressed oil?

I appreciate anyone's honest feedback.

HI Krishna,

Please drop me some literatures about Jatropha such as selecting the best seed, planting, growing, harvesting and processing as bio diesel. If I have a 20-hectare land for this plant, can I be able to process it with own processing equipment or processing plant? How much it cost approx to invest in jatropha bio diesel processing machineries?

Thank you and my email address is ztinb@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Gerry

Hi Krishna,

Could you please mail me the details about Jatropha (all three points if possible) at harsh01@yahoo.com. I am also interested in importing Jatropha seeds from India to US. Could you please let me know about regulations in the US for importing/cultivating jatropha. Also from India do you require any special licenses/permits to export the seeds?

Thanks,
Harsh.

Im growing Jatropha in Arizona and California currently.

The only issues I have found is the legal import of the seed. I had to get a seed import permit from the USDA and have the seed quarentined prior to release.

Once I had physical posession of the seed, there has been no further issues. I have gone through both the Arizona and California departments of Agriculture.

There is no transport permit required either within the state or cross border. California is noted for extensive regulation, but I can import and move seed without any issues. The biggest problem was getting the DeptAg to state that the Jatropha curcas is not considered a noxous weed, which is a category under which propigation is regulated.

My plan is to plant 40 acres in Cal and a small plot near Phoenix and one near Yuma Arizona this spring. In-fact, I will be seeding part of the 40-acres next weekend.

I have grown potted Jatropha for the past year and hope to use a slightly more frost-tolerant variety from Honduras to help with the early losses of yearling plants. The idea is to use a greenhouse for the first 1-2 years to get the plants somewhat older at which point they exhibit better frost tolerance than yearling seeds.

Codisco-inc has a plantation near Houston TX. they also sell seedlings. I purchase mine from them and don't have to pay import fees and all due to the fact they're grown here. Give them a shout if you have a chance.

Seed import permit is easy to obtain, and can be done electronically. Contact the website of the USDA and look for the APHIS program. They have a form which can be filled out or faxed in, and several weeks later they provide you with a permit and green/yellow shipping lables. You send the instructions and label to the person shipping you the seed, and they ship to the nearest inspection station, which then forwards to your address.

It was easy and I had no problems when I did it.
