BIG CATS
Tiger  Panthera tigris
While the North African and Sri Lankan leopards are endangered, in sub-Saharan Africa there are as many as 500,000 leopards today. Compared to the Asian leopards, African cats are lighter colored and their rosettes are smaller and set closer together. Melanistic African leopards have also been observed.

Weight: weight ranges from 400 to 650 pounds, females slightly smaller.

Height: measured at the shoulder, 42 inches.

Lifespan: tigers can live up to 20 years in the wild.

Habitat and Range: Wild tigers are now found only in Asia, up until the 1800's, tigers lived throughout the southern half of the continent. Now only a few wild tigers remain in some countries, none are left in Iran and Pakistan. Tigers can live and thrive in almost any climate only requiring a little shade, water, and a food supply. Tigers are found from the rain forests of Thailand to the hot, dry thorn woods of India. The Siberian Tiger is found, where else but the forests of Siberia.

Endangered Status: endangered
